The chair has won an award at the prestigious German Design Awards
On the road to a more sustainable industry, the exchange of knowledge between companies from traditional and innovative sectors is essential. The collaboration between the furniture manufacturer Ondarreta and the research centre CIDETEC Surface Engineering is a clear example. What began as a research project to find a solution to the wood waste generated by the furniture factory, has culminated in bringing a chair made with revalued material to the market.
POLISURF, a project that began in 2019, promoted by CIDETEC and HABIC, the Basque Country Equipment, Furniture and Design Cluster, of which Ondarreta is a member, received funding from the Hazitek strategic programme to launch this innovative proposal. As a result, the so-called Re-Wood was born, made from a new material incorporating waste from the wood transformation process, caring for the environment and promoting sustainability.
The chair, called Hari, made of polypropylene with a Re-Wood finish, has won gold in the Excellent Product Design – Eco Design category at the German Design Awards, the most prestigious awards in the field of European design.
