Polymeric materials for the health sector
Polymeric materials for the health sector
Polymeric materials are a cornerstone in the development of biomedical technologies due to their wide range of physicochemical properties and their ability to be structurally modified. Their biocompatibility, compatibility with sterilization processes, and processability make them ideal for applications ranging from disposable devices (syringes, infusion bags, gloves) to permanent implants, catheters, prostheses, and controlled drug delivery systems.
The engineering of functionalized polymers has enabled the development of surfaces with antibacterial, hydrophilic, or stimuli-responsive properties, acting only on the surface. On the other hand, biodegradable polymers are key in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. Together, these materials not only ensure safety and efficiency in medical devices, but also drive innovation toward more personalized and advanced therapies.
Why polymeric materials for the health sector?
The advancement of medical and biotechnology technologies has made available solutions that were completely unthinkable a few decades ago. However, many of the devices used are still manufactured with materials available a century ago.
The margin for improvement is therefore enormous, and at CIDETEC we research to develop tailored solutions for each of the applications.
What do we offer?
We apply our knowledge in the design, synthesis, and characterization of biomaterials, as well as the regulatory framework (medical device or pharma) to generate:
We offer:
- Synthetic and natural origin materials tailored for the development of medical devices.
- Injectable and printable hydrogels.
- Polymeric materials for encapsulation of cells/organoids.
- (Photo)polymerization processes.
- Development of manufacturing processes adapting them to quality/regulatory standards, and their validation.
For Whom?
End users:
Our capabilities and infrastructures
We have a highly qualified interdisciplinary team with experience in research, transfer, scaling-up, and regulatory.
Additionally, we have:
Synthesis laboratories:
To design and synthesize advanced materials, work on the functionalization of natural origin materials, surface modification, or bioprinting. The laboratory is equipped with an extensive characterization area including chromatography, spectroscopy, thermal, and mechanical characterization.
Controlled environment laboratories:
Where we can produce batches with low endotoxin levels, develop sterilization processes, fine-tune processes according to quality standards.
Cell culture laboratory:
For biological evaluation including cytocompatibility, migration, proliferation, chondroinduction, and inflammation models.
