On April 27, CIDETEC and CDTI organize a seminar in which, in addition to the CDTI Aid Instruments, the results will be presented in the Basque Country in 2021 and the news for this 2022

The event, which will take place at the Scientific and Technological Park of Gipuzkoa, can be followed online

 

Faced with a changing reality and in which it is essential to innovate to remain competitive, it is essential to know first-hand the tools we have to face the challenges that the market presents us. 

In this context, CIDETEC and CDTI organize a seminar in which the Department of Institutional Promotion and Territorial Cooperation of the CDTI will present the Instruments of Aid of the CDTI, as well as the results in the Basque Country in 2021 and the innovations for this 2022. The day will begin with the presentation of the “Instruments of Aid of the CDTI”, by María del Pilar Román Fernández, member of the Department, and will continue with the presentation of the “Results Basque Country 2021 and News 2022” with Pilar González Gotor, Head of the same department.

The research centre will continue to be the technology partner of the manufacturer of aesthetic and functional assemblies for the automotive industry for the next three years.

 

MAIER, a leading multinational company in the manufacture of aesthetic and functional components for the automotive industry, and the applied research organisation CIDETEC will continue to collaborate closely in R&D&I, as well as in the search for new business opportunities. The new agreement links both firms until the end of 2024.

The alliance, which began with MAIER’s incorporation to CIDETEC’s board of trustees in 2003 and was certified with the signing of the first collaboration agreement in 2005, reflects the organisations’ firm intention to continue working closely in the development of technology and contemplates the strengthening of CIDETEC’s position as MAIER’s key technology partner, all in alignment with the company’s strategic objectives.

In addition, both organisations will try to find new business niches in which to implement their activity, based on the knowledge base and experience provided by CIDETEC, both in the automotive sector and in new markets.

The Frontiers 2021 project will open up new R&D avenues

 

With the surge of interest in protection against pathogens as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been a significant increase in the demand for antibacterial and antiviral surfaces and coatings as one of the mechanisms to prevent their spread. CIDETEC Surface Engineering is leading the ‘Frontiers 2021’ project, promoting research in this field.

The project has a twofold objective: on the one hand, to generate frontier scientific and technological knowledge in the field of surfaces and surface treatment technologies in R&D centres in the Basque Autonomous Community (BAC) for the generation of antibacterial and antiviral surfaces that are innocuous, sustainable and durable over time, for different medical and industrial applications. On the other hand, Frontiers 2021 seeks to resolve strategic challenges identified in the surfaces field, in order to establish a medium-long term vision towards innocuous, sustainable and digitalised hygienic surfaces, which will be a key factor of competitiveness in the industrial sectors driving the economy of the BAC.

In its first months of life, Frontiers 2021 is in an initial phase in which the partners are working on the development of antibacterial and antiviral surfaces, making considerable progress in the development and optimisation of methods for characterising antibacterial and antiviral capacity.

The Frontiers strategy: Multifunctional surfaces at the frontier of knowledge, aligned with the main challenges of Basque industry, was launched in 2015 and has enabled new lines and opportunities to be exploited within the Basque Science and Technology Network.

Frontiers 2021, funded by the Elkartekprogramme, began in March 2021 and involves the participation of Tekniker, Tecnalia, MTC, CIC-bioGUNE, Tecnun, Fundación Biofísica Bizkaia (FBB) and BCMaterials.

THERMALASER project “THERMAlly sprayed and LASER sintered ceramic coatings to protect steel structures” was launched on November 1, 2021. This project will develop new powder formulations, together with a new process to produce ceramic protective coatings based on the combination of two technologies: thermal spraying with suspensions and powders feedstock and laser post-sintering. The main objective is to achieve new high corrosion-resistant coatings for protection of metallic structures subjected to extreme environmental conditions, such as those suffered by the base of offshore wind towers or silos for grain and chemical storage.

The project has a relevant Consortium covering the whole production chain, allowing a position of strength within the proposed markets. The Spanish company TORRECID will develop ceramic formulations with required functionalities, suitable for both thermal spraying and laser sintering. All the powders produced will be utilized by using different spraying techniques. The German SME job coater PUTZIER will develop coatings applied by thermal spraying with powder feedstocks. FRAUNHOFER, represented by two Institutes IWS and IKTS, will contribute  its strong knowledge on development and thermal spraying of suspensions. The sintering of coatings will be carried out by the Spanish SME EXOM Engineering, who is also the project coordinator, using different laser post-treatments of the components. Advanced characterization of ceramic coatings will be done by research centre CIDETEC Surface Engineering, which will be subcontracted by the Spanish companies.

In the final phase of the project, the most promising coatings will be used to produce demonstrator components for silos/storage tanks and offshore wind tower structures to be tested and validated in real conditions.

The objective is to develop a completely new process for the preparation of enamelled steels providing a smooth surface, well adherent and high corrosion-resistant coating. By applying this technique, the risk of distortion and microstructural alteration of structural steels will be avoided preserving their mechanical properties. Moreover, the new technology, will allow to deposit coatings on cost-efficient steels to meet the demanded quality and functionality requirements. Therefore, the THERMALASER solution will lead to significant savings in the cost of the final product and in maintenance and replacement operations due to the extension of the service life.

The THERMALASER project has received the EUROSTARS-EUREKA seal of approval with a total budget of 1,617,041.37 € and will last for 30 months.

José Antonio Díez Silanes, Business Development Manager of Technological Services at CIDETEC Surface Engineering, has been elected president in the elections for the renewal of the Board of Directors of the Association of Surface Finishing Industries (AIAS), held on 16th February, thus becoming the ninth president of the entity as his candidacy and that of his team was unanimously approved. He replaces Josep Maria Simó Consola, who has held the presidency for the last 8 years, with two consecutive terms of office.

The following team will accompany the current president: 1st Vice-President for Board Affairs and Promotion, Josep M. Simó of J. CLAPÉ, SA. Enric Esquerdo of TACSA-Tratamientos y Acabados por Cataforesis, SA and Enric Martínez of BOMBAS ESPECIALES TORRES, SL will renew their positions as 2nd Vice-President and Treasurer, and 3rd Vice-President and Secretary, respectively. José Antonio Díez Silanes, PhD in Chemistry from the University of the Basque Country, has 30 years of experience in research in the field of coatings and surface treatment. He has been with CIDETEC since 1997 and was Director of the Surfaces Division until 2016. He is currently Business Development Manager at CIDETEC Surface Engineering. His career is endorsed by his participation in different R&D projects, 2 patents, writing more than 40 scientific papers, directing 2 Doctoral Theses, as well as his participation in different committees and representations related to the field of surface treatments, Masters and Postgraduate Courses. For the last two years he has been a member of the Board of Directors of AIAS.

For José Antonio Díez, the new president of AIAS, “the composition of this new Board of Directors is a true reflection of the main objective set for the next four years of office: to ensure that each member reaffirms their sense of belonging to AIAS, so that they feel that their contribution is essential to the development of our association”. José Antonio also set other key objectives for the next four years, such as the training and participation of member companies in R&D projects, the broadening of AIAS’s horizons in Europe and the relationship with clusters and other associations. Finally, he highlighted the relevant role of AIAS in the revision of the BREF STM document, due to its importance and impact on the companies in the sector, committing to working on improving the loyalty of the current members and strengthening the association.
