Acoustic emission for real time monitoring of degradation
Degradation processes, as for example corrosion, cracking, wearing, and many others, take place in a variety of industrial sectors. In order to control the damage and ensure the integrity of the assets, real-time monitoring is a key strategy that allow us to:
- Early detect the damaging process, minimizing its impact.
- Ensuring the safety by preventing the failure of structures.
- Save costs thanks to the condition-based inspection and tailored MRO procedures.
With this regard, the acoustic emission (AE) is a monitoring technique based on capturing in real time the genuine release of acoustic waves during a degradation process, long before it can be noticed by other means. If you can’t see it, you can hear it!

Why?
What do we offer?
To develop a tailored methodology to enable the AE technique as a real-time monitoring tool for detecting and tracking different degradation phenomena that affects materials in different industries.
The enabling of the AE technique as a real-time monitoring tool for a specific degradation phenomenon requires a step-by-step process, namely:
1. Reproduction of the degradation phenomenon in a control way, while capturing the acoustic response.
2. Degradation characterization to determine the influencing stages (material science).
3. Advanced analysis of the signals (AE waves): data preprocessing, signal analysis, signals classification.
4. Identification of the AE signals coming from the specific mechanism of the degradation process.
5. Build-up of a filtering system aimed at the detection and follow-up of the targeted degradation phenomenon.
6. Validation of the AE-based monitoring system in real environments/structures.
